Thailand’s best-documented visitor point is Chiang Mai. A design-forward craft city with carved teak, silver, celadon ceramics, sa paper and hill tribe textiles, and an unusually strong culture of working with foreign designers. A visit here is worth arranging directly through a workshop, cooperative or the town’s craft association rather than turning up unannounced, since much of the work happens in small family units, not public showrooms.
