Visiting the craft trade in China
China’s best-documented visitor point is Jingdezhen. A thousand years of continuous porcelain production, with kiln, mould, glaze and decoration all available inside one city. Used for fine porcelain bodies, blue-and-white decoration and low-to-medium volume custom shapes. A visit here is worth arranging directly through a workshop, cooperative or the town’s craft association rather than turning up unannounced, since much of the work happens in small family units, not public showrooms.
Beyond these named towns, China also has craft activity organised around cooperatives, state or regional emporiums, and export clusters that are not set up as visitor attractions but will often host a serious buyer or a small group by prior arrangement. Season, festival calendars and current opening arrangements are worth checking close to your travel date rather than relying on anything printed in advance.
