Visiting the craft trade in Ghana
Ghana’s best-documented visitor point is Bolgatanga. The bolga basket cluster of northern Ghana, weaving elephant grass into a product that reaches European and American retail in very large volume through cooperative structures. A visit here is worth arranging directly through a workshop, cooperative or the town’s craft association rather than turning up unannounced, since much of the work happens in small family units, not public showrooms.
Beyond these named towns, Ghana also has craft activity organised around cooperatives, state or regional emporiums, and export clusters that are not set up as visitor attractions but will often host a serious buyer or a small group by prior arrangement. Season, festival calendars and current opening arrangements are worth checking close to your travel date rather than relying on anything printed in advance.
