Clay bodies, yarn, hides, timber, metal alloy, glass cullet, dyes and finishes decide most of what a craft product will cost and how it will behave in the destination market. Craft producers usually buy inputs locally and in small lots, which means input quality can drift between production runs in ways that a factory supply chain would not tolerate. Buyers who specify the input rather than only the outcome — naming the yarn count, the alloy, the tanning method — get far more repeatable results across seasons.
